Cougars open season Feb. 18 at MLB4 Tournament

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball right-hander Jaycob Deese boasts The American's "best fastball" while shortstop Ian McMillan has been tabbed the league's "best defensive infielder" by Baseball America as part of the publication's annual league preview.

Deese, a junior from Houston, finished second on the team a season ago with 52 strikeouts across 66.2 innings. The North Shore High School product tossed 5.0-plus innings in six of his seven starts and allowed two-or-fewer walks in 14 of 16 outings.

McMillan, Houston's most veteran student-athlete entering the 2022 season, was a mainstay at shortstop a season ago, helping the Cougars turn 23 double plays. The redshirt junior committed six errors in 221 total chances.

Five Cougars were recognized among Baseball America's Top 20 Prospects for 2022 including right-handed junior Logan Clayton (No. 5) Deese (No. 8), third baseman redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold (No. 11), right-handed junior Derrick Cherry (No. 16) and right-handed junior Nathan Medrano (No. 17).

Arnold was also recognized as the league's No. 5 top newcomer while Samuel Tormos was tabbed the league's No. 10 prospect for the 2023 MLB Draft.

Houston opens its season one week from Friday at the MLB4 Tournament from Scottsdale, Arizona. First pitch against Cal is slated for 2 p.m. CT and can be seen on the MLB Network. The Cougars face San Diego State on Saturday (6 p.m. CT) and TCU on Sunday (11 a.m. CT).
