North Texas Ready for Rice

2/9/2022 1:59:00 PM | Women's Basketball

DENTON, Texas – North Texas women's basketball is set to host Rice on Thursday inside the Super Pit at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+. Zac Babb will have the call on KNTU 88.1 FM. North Texas returns home after picking up two consecutive C-USA road games in decisive fashion.

The Mean Green knocked off the then first place team in the West Division, UAB. North Texas made life difficult on the offensive end of the floor for the conference's third best offense. The Mean Green will look to do the same with Rice. The Owls are led by the sixth best scorer in C-USA, Ashlee Austin. Austin averages half a point more than UNT's Quincy Noble.

The next two games between North Texas and Rice will be de facto games because both teams have six losses in conference play. The West Division leaders, Southern Miss and UAB both have four losses a piece which keeps both UNT and Rice within striking distance. It makes for an interesting stretch for North Texas women's basketball playing Rice twice this week due to COVID-19 pauses earlier this season.

On Thursday, Madison Townley is set to garner the all-time record for most games played in school history. She will surpass Brittney James (2006-10) with game No. 124 against Rice. In addition to the Townley ball presentation, North Texas is putting on a Galentines Day. Help celebrate Townley and Valentine's Day for only $20. For that price, you will receive two tickets for admission, two wine glasses, two drink vouchers, and two heart-shaped boxes of chocolate.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"It's always a good thing when you come home with two wins on the road. Staying consistent and showing growth the rest of the season will be crucial for us. Rice plays a slightly different style, I do know they are a longer team that can shoot the ball well. They are more guard oriented without a true post player because their fours and fives can get out to shoot it. They are a team that's getting better down the stretch so it will be a challenge for us on Thursday and Sunday."
