Men’s Golf Leads after First Day at Border Olympics

Senior Andrew Gibson in third, joins four Cougars among Top-20 leaders

LAREDO, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program held the first-day lead after the first 36 holes of the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club on Monday evening.
 
After firing a team-score of 284 on the 7,204-yard, par-72 course, the Cougars bettered that total with a 283 in the afternoon session and held a 7-shot lead over Sam Houston State and No. 50 Baylor with a score of 564.
 
Seniors Andrew Gibson and Alexander Frances finished the first day at 5-under 139 and were tied for third. Junior Marcus Wochner and senior Braxton Watkins joined Gibson and Watkins among the Top-25 leaders.
 
Teams tee off in the Final Round at 8 a.m., Tuesday, in a shotgun start.
 
In the morning session, Frances posted a 69 to lead the Cougars. Starting on No. 7, Frances ran into early trouble with a bogey on No. 8 and dropped to 2-over with another bogey on No. 13. However, the Stege, Denmark, native moved into red numbers with three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17 and added another birdie on No. 1
 
After enduring his final bogey of the round on No. 2, Frances made birdie on two of his last three holes to finish with a 69.
 
Gibson enjoyed a red-hot start to his day with three birdies on his first four holes, starting off No. 6. He sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16-17 before battling through three bogeys on his final five holes.
 
Wochner opened the day with a 72 and was tied for 13th with Watkins at 145. Junior Austyn Reily was tied for 38th at 150.
 
Freshman Julio Rios-Brache was tied for 33rd at 149, while redshirt freshman Jacob Borow was tied for 53rd at 152. Redshirt freshman Drew Murdock was tied for 77th at 158. All three student-athletes competed as individuals.
 
Lamar (575), Louisiana Tech (577), ULM (585), Rice (588), UTSA (592), New Mexico State (594) and Bowling Green (595) rounded out the Top 10.
 
Baylor's Johnny Keefer and Lamar's Hugo Hellman held the first-day individual lead at 7-under 137. Frances and Gibson joined ULM's Jacob Agerschou in third while Louisiana Tech teammates Sam Murphy and Mac Murphy were tied for sixth at 140.

UP NEXT
Following the Border Olympics, Houston returns to action when it competes at the Cabo Collegiate on the Ocean Course at Cove Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on Feb. 27-March 1.
 
From there, the Cougars will play host to their All-American Intercollegiate on March 21-22 at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, before competing at the prestigious Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian Golf Club on March 28-29.
