Roundabout at Maynard Terrace and the I-20 Eastbound Exit Ramp
What's next in the process

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is in the final stages of design of the roundabout at Maynard Terrace and the I-20 Eastbound Exit Ramp (GDOT PI Number 0013333). The project consists of the construction of a roundabout with partial dual lanes, pedestrian ramp facilities and lighting at the intersection of Maynard Terrace and McPherson Avenue and the I-20 Eastbound Exit Ramp. The location of the proposed roundabout is provided in the photo below.

The roundabout will reduce vehicle crash frequency and the severity of a crash. Based on a review of the crash data at this intersection, a traffic signal would not address the crash and injury history at this location as effectively as a roundabout. The Crash Modification Factor associated with fatal/injury crashes indicates a signal could provide a 40 percent reduction in fatal/injury crashes while a roundabout provides a 71 percent reduction in fatal/injury crashes.
Previous Outreach Efforts
We hope you will recall that GDOT worked with community organizations and individuals to collect and consider feedback about the roundabout. First, a meeting was held with former Atlanta City Council member Natalyn Archibong on August 14, 2019, at Atlanta City Hall to present the project information to and to help the project team identify potential issues. Concept layouts were shown and project details, such as the roundabout size and design alternatives, were discussed. Stakeholder lists were provided to Archibong for input on individuals who should be involved in future stakeholder meetings.

The meeting at Atlanta City Hall was followed by a stakeholder’s meeting held on October 3, 2019, at the Atlanta Pipefitter’s Union Hall located at the project intersection. The project team, along with Archibong and six stakeholders from the community, discussed the project concept and the community concerns.

The issues raised focused on:
  • the size of the proposed traffic circle
  • accommodating cyclists and pedestrians with the new intersection design and
  • connectivity with the PATH Foundation Battle of Atlanta Greenway Trail Project.
As a result of these discussions, some changes were made:
  • the circle diameter was reduced from 150 feet to 139 feet
  • a 10-feet shared use path was incorporated into the western side of the proposed project and
  • additional pavement width was provided heading northbound on Maynard Terrace SE to accommodate bicycle traffic.
Finally, a virtual Public Information and Detour Open House was posted on GDOT’s public outreach site from April 16, 2020, through May 14, 2020. The online posting replaced an in-person meeting - allowing the public to review the proposed project, provide feedback or write in with questions at their convenience and while maintaining safety protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additional Resources
Information regarding roundabouts is available through GDOT and Federal Highway Administration websites listed below. These websites contain resources that include brochures, videos and other information about a roundabout’s benefits.

And because a roundabout or a new building can affect stormwater control we take this opportunity to share some information about GDOT’s stormwater management program.

Proposed Detour Route
Finally, as previously presented, GDOT reminds you of the proposed detour. The project would be constructed with a one-month, weekend-only closure on the I-20 eastbound off ramp and a four-month closure on McPherson Avenue SE.

The temporary closure of the I-20 eastbound off ramp would detour traffic:
  • to the Glenwood Avenue SE exit off of I-20 eastbound,
  • traffic would travel west down Glenwood Avenue SE and,
  • turn north to return to Maynard Terrace SE,
  • detour totals approximately 1.1 miles in length
The temporary closure of the easternmost portion of McPherson Avenue SE would detour traffic:
  • to the south on Maynard Terrace SE until the intersection with Glenwood Avenue SE,
  • traffic would travel westbound on Glenwood Ave SE until making a northbound turn onto Flat Shoals Avenue,
  • with a subsequent eastbound turn to return to McPherson Avenue SE,
  • detour totals approximately 1.8 miles in length
Please note: There would be no closures on Maynard Terrace SE during the construction of the project.
Thank You for Your Involvement and Input
