Cougars begin 2022 season at MLB4 Tournament
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Houston Baseball begins the 2022 season at 2 p.m. CT Friday, facing Cal on the MLB Network to open the MLB4 Tournament from Salt River Fields. The Cougars take on San Diego State on Saturday (6 p.m. CT) and No. 8 TCU on Sunday (11 a.m. CT).
Fans can listen to all three games on The Varsity Network app and Cougars All-Access with Lonnie King on the call. The opener against Cal can also be seen on MLB.com.

NEED TO KNOW
For the first time since 2003, the Cougars are opening their season outside the City of Houston. That year, UH began its slate at the Battle of the Beach (Malibu, Calif.). Houston has posted a winning record on opening weekend in 10 of 11 series under head coach Todd Whitting including sweeping Texas Southern in 2021.
The Cougars are 5-2 all-time in seven prior matchups against Cal with the last coming in 2013. Houston is 3-7 against San Diego State with the last matchup coming in 2005. Houston and TCU have met 102 times with the Cougars holding a 52-48-2 edge. The teams last met in 2019 as part of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
Houston senior, and Boston native, Ryan Hernandez has been recognized as a preseason all-conference honoree by Perfect Game at designated hitter. Hernandez led Houston in hits (52), RBIs (37), home runs (11) and total bases (90) a season ago.
As part of the 2022 schedule, the Cougars play 37 games inside the state of Texas, host 32 games at Schroeder Park, play games against 12 different conferences (twice as many as a season ago) and play games in seven different states.
