UAB Opens Home Stand Thursday Night Against Rice

2/16/2022 5:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will look to move to 15-0 in Bartow Arena for just the second time in program history when the Blazers host Rice on Thursday night. Thursday night's tipoff in Bartow Arena is set for 7 p.m. and will be carried live on Stadium.

The Blazers (19-6, 9-3 C-USA) have won four of their past five games in Bartow Arena by 21 points or more and will look to avenge their 85-80 loss to the Owls from earlier this season. UAB will look to not only notch its 10th Conference USA victory of the season, but also its 20th overall win in 2021-22. The win would also give head coach Andy Kennedy his 12th 20-win season as a collegiate head coach.

UAB holds a 17-3 overall record against the Owls and a 9-1 advantage in matchups played in Birmingham. Rice (14-10, 6-6 C-USA) stormed back from a 10-point deficit in the second half to rally past the Blazers on Jan. 8 in Houston.

UAB LATELY
UAB (19-6, 9-3 C-USA) dropped its most recent matchup at Old Dominion on Sunday, forcing a season-low seven turnovers in the setback in Norfolk, Virginia. Jordan Walker continued his hot streak on Sunday, setting a new UAB record with nine straight games with 20 or more points with 20 points and seven assists at Old Dominion. KJ Buffen logged his sixth double-double of the season in the loss, tallying 11 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Quan Jackson continued his strong run of performances with 17 points, eight rebounds and a steal on Sunday, making it seven straight games in double figures since scoring a career-high 29 points against Florida Atlantic on Jan. 15. UAB is a perfect 5-0 following a loss this season and 10-1 overall since Andy Kennedy took over at his alma mater.

RICE LATELY
Rice (14-10, 6-6 C-USA) is 3-2 in its past five games, winning Conference USA matchups at Southern Miss and at home against UTSA by double digits during that five-game span. The Owls excel at sharing the basketball, ranking first in Conference USA and 21st nationally with 16.3 assists per game. Rice also ranks top 25 nationally and first in Conference USA in 3-point field-goal percentage, knocking down 37.9% of its attempts from behind the arc. Two Owls average over double figures in scoring this season -- guards Carl Pierre (14.8) and Travis Evee (14.4). Evee tallied a season-high 25 points against the Blazers in UAB's loss to the Owls in Houston on Jan. 8, converting 13-of-14 shots from the foul line. The Owls are 4-4 on the road this season, splitting their most road trip with a win at Southern Miss and an 80-63 loss at Louisiana Tech on Jan. 27.
