A monthly speaker series on what is called a “first Thursday” cadence is about to be launched at the recently renovated Fort Bend Museum. The free series, supported with a grant from Reliant Energy, will feature sessions at 7:00 p.m. inside the Fort Bend Museum’s exhibit gallery, 410 S. Fifth Street, in Richmond.

The “Our History, Our Diversity” series will begin with Rice University professor, Dr. Erin Baumgartner, on March 7. That session will deal with a wide-ranging overview of diversity in Fort Bend County, tracing the demographics and stories that led to a rich mix of residents. The presenter of the session, Dr. Baumgartner, is also a demographer at Rice’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research, and an associate director at the Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC).

“We’re excited to explore diversity as such a compelling aspect of our county and its history,” said Steve Nelson, Fort Bend History Association board member. “Dr. Baumgartner’s perspective will set the tone for the entire series and all the speakers we have lined up throughout the year.” Nelson said that hosting the series in the new museum space and making it free to the public represents the spirit and mission of the museum association.

Last year, the Fort Bend Museum located in the heart of historic Richmond underwent a $2 million renovation and expansion. The effort was for creating a flexible, modernized venue to serve as a traditional museum by day and an event center and community hub by night.
