NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team battled a tough opponent but were ultimately defeated by a 6-1 score to the Rice Owls on Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The doubles point was hotly contested and it all came down to a tiebreak.
Espen Lagarde and
Marcel Volz started the day with an easy victory at flight two by a 6-1 score line. After Rice struck back with a 6-3 victory at flight three, it was left to the match at flight one.
Max Heinzel and
Akos Kotorman took it to a tiebreak but Sumit Sarkar and Haoyuan Huang prevailed 7-4 in the tiebreak to earn Rice the doubles point.
Though Rice took five of the six singles matches, there were many close calls and three-set battles. Rice led 3-0 after their flight five and six players both won in straight sets.
Lagarde put the point on the board for New Orleans after persevering in a tiebreak in the first set of a 7-6, 6-3 win against Campbell Salmon.
The remainder of the matches went to three sets. Emir Sendogan clinched the proceedings for Rice when he rallied from a set down for a 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 win. Huang also came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Flight three went to a 10-point tiebreak in the third set which was won by Trinity Grear 10-7 to finish off the day.
