WBB: Feb. 21 Players of the Week

DALLAS – Following back-to-back home wins, Charlotte’s Octavia Jett-Wilson, the C-USA Co-Preseason Player of the Year, was named the Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced on Monday. Additionally Rice’s Malia Fisher was named the C-USA Freshman of the Week, her third honor this year. The 2021-22 C-USA Players of the Week awards are presented by Surf & Turf Golf and are voted on by the league’s women’s basketball communications directors.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
OCTAVIA JETT-WILSON, CHARLOTTE
FIFTH YEAR, G, 5-8, GREENBELT, MD.
Jett-Wilson, the C-USA Co-Preseason Player of the Year, put up 51 points in 52 minutes of action leading the East Division leading 49ers to a pair of home wins this week. In an 89-43 victory over WKU, Jett-Wilson scored 17 points in 24 minutes of limited action shooting 50 percent from the field with nine boards and pair of steals. On Saturday in an 18-point win over Marshall, the fifth year senior exploded for 34 points on 63 percent shooting and five rebounds. Of her 34 in just 28 minutes, 16 came in a fourth-quarter takeover. In each of the two wins, Jett-Wilson made two of her three from long range, made 5-of-6 from the line against the Hilltoppers and 8-of-9 vs. the Herd. Jett-Wilson averaged 25.5 points shooting 59 percent on the week, 67 percent from three-point land and 87 percent from the line. Jett-Wilson also averaged seven boards and 3.5 steals to help keep the Niners’ atop the league standings.
 
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
MALIA FISHER, RICE
FRESHMAN, F, 6-2, DACULA, GA.
Fisher averaged a double-double OF 11 points and 10.5 rebounds for the weekend while helping guide the Owls to consecutive C-USA victories for the first time this season. In Saturday's win over FIU, Fisher notched her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points while pulling down 18 rebounds, the most boards by a C-USA player this season during league play. She also went 11-of-13 from the free throw line including an 8-of-8 mark in the fourth quarter. Fisher's six double-double are tied for the fourth-most in C-USA this season.
