Houston enters win column, takes down McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Houston Baseball made the most of its opportunities offensively and rode a strong performance from its pitching staff, picking up its first victory of the season with a 3-2 win at McNeese on Tuesday night from Joe Miller Ballpark.

With the game tied at two, Houston (1-3) took the lead for good in the sixth, capitalizing on a pair of walks and a fielding error. With one away, shortstop Ian McMillan plated designated hitter Santiago Garcia (walk) with an RBI-fielder's choice.

Reliever Ben Sears (1-0) excelled in relief, striking out a career-high seven batters in 4.0 scoreless frames. The right-hander permitted just two hits without a walk. Friday night starter Nathan Medrano earned the save behind a hitless ninth alongside two strikeouts.

Houston starter Derrick Cherry tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, working around one hit and two walks while striking out three. Reliever José Torrealba needed just nine pitches to complete a perfect eighth inning while striking out a pair.

Houston center fielder Samuel Tormos jump-started the scoring in the first, scoring left fielder Brandon Uhse (walk) and Zach Arnold (walk) on a two-run single while chasing McNeese starter Zane Zeppuhar, who allowed two hits, two runs and two walks while recording just two outs.

Trailing 2-0, McNeese (2-2) struck back in the third thanks to a game-tying two-run home run from designated hitter Tre' Obregon. Cowboys' reliever Davis Burgin (0-1) drew the loss, permitting an unearned run while walking two in 0.2 innings.

Houston opens a seven-game homestand from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park on Friday. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. against Texas Southern. Saturday's matchup against UTRGV will begin at 6:30 p.m. while Sunday's finale starts at 1 p.m.
