LYNCHBURG, Va.
– Marshall got off to an excellent start with a bronze medal in the 200 Medley Relay on Wednesday, the first night of competition at the 2022 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships.

The meet is being held at the Liberty Natatorium in Lynchburg. Marshall is currently third with 68 points. FIU leads the way with 88, followed by Rice in second with 76. North Texas and Florida Atlantic are tied for fourth with 66, while Old Dominion is sixth with 64.

The quartet of Raeleigh Mooij, Paige Banton, Klava Katayama and Regain Raines finished in a time of 1:41.40 to pick up 36 team points.

The 800 Free Relay team of Gabrielle Ivey, Leigh Lopez-Silvers, Madeline Hart and Sofia Bormett then followed with a fifth-place showing in 7:27.14 to secure 32 points.

"It was a strong start for this group tonight," said Marshall head coach Ian Walsh. "The 200 Medley Relay set the tone for us, notching the fifth all-time Top 10 time in program history. The icing on the cake was getting our hand on the wall for third. We carried that momentum into our 800 Free Relay with our sixth-fastest relay in program history. Gabby led off with a lifetime best and is now seventh all-time in the 200 Free for the program.

"I'm really proud of this group, especially with our underclassmen managing the emotions, starting off this championship meet following a COVID championship setting. I can't wait for tomorrow as we have a lot of first swims and dives for the team."

Day two will get underway at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning with preliminary action in 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 3-meter diving. The evening session (6 p.m.) will feature the finals of those events, plus the 200 Free Relay.
