SWIM: C-USA Championship Day 2 Recap

LYNCHBURG - The second day of competition at the 2022 C-USA Swimming & Diving Championships has come to a close. FIU still leads the pack following today's events in the pool.

Defending C-USA champions FIU remain in the lead after day two with 352 points. The Rice Owls racked up points with their performance in the pool today and sit in close second with 321. North Texas sits in third with 202, Marshall in fourth with 198 and Florida Atlantic in fifth with 190. Old Dominion holds the sixth place spot with 147 points.
 
Rice freshman Amelia Kane took gold in the 500-yd freestyle with a time of 4:49.87. Florida Atlantic's Maggie Casey followed in second at 4:51.00, and FIU's Stephanie Hussey came in third with a mark of 4:51.02.

The 200-yd Individual Medley was the second final of the evening. FIU freshman standout Christie Chue earned the top spot on the podium with her time of 1:59.42. Marta Cano Minarro of Rice, the 2020 C-USA champion in this event, took the silver medal with a time of 1:59.14, and reigning 200-yd IM champion Tara Enneking took the bronze at 2:00.08. 

Next came the "splash-and-dash" 50-yd freestyle sprint. Junior Elinah Phillip of FIU won the event with a time of 22:33. She was followed by teammate Kelsi Campbell at 22:56 in second. Rice's Maddy Howe rounded out the top three with her mark of 22.85.

Prior to the final swimming event of the night, the 3-meter diving finals were contested. Florida Atlantic junior shattered an Owls program record in the 3-meter on her way to winning a C-USA Championship gold. The junior from Madrid, Spain scored a 358.90, besting her previous FAU record in the 3-meter by over 22 points. FIU's Maha Gouda placed a close second with a mark of 358.65. North Texas junior Saylor Hawkins won the bronze with 322.15.

FIU won their third relay of the weekend on day two -- this time in the 200-yd Freestyle Relay. The FIU team consisted of Elinah Phillip, Kelsie Campbell, Stephanie Hussey and Julia Miranda. The Rice and Marshall relay teams took second and third, respectively.

The 2022 C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships will resume Friday, February 25, with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m. ET. Day two finals will begin at 6 p.m. ET streamed live for free on CUSA.tv.
