Houston Earns Doubleheader Sweep

Cougars run win streak to four with 3-1 win

HOUSTON – Houston designated hitter Alex Lopez delivered a go-ahead, bases-loaded RBI-single in the eighth inning, helping the Cougars to a 3-1 win and doubleheader sweep of UTRGV on Sunday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

With the game deadlocked at one, the Cougars (4-3) loaded the bases on three walks, setting the stage for Lopez's one-out bloop single into shallow center to plate the go-ahead run. One batter later, center fielder Samuel Tormos provided an RBI-single into left.

The victory was the fourth consecutive for Houston. Cougar reliever Ben Sears (2-0) earned the win, tossing the final 2.0 innings. The right-hander worked around two hits and a walk while leaving the tying run at first base in the ninth inning.

Houston starter Logan Clayton was masterful, holding UTRGV (5-2) to two hits and one run across 7.0 innings. The right-hander struck out five and allowed two walks while lowering his ERA to 3.18.

After a 16-run outburst in the doubleheader opener, Houston continued the trend in the first inning, taking advantage of Brandon Uhse and Zach Arnold walks as Rey Mendoza delivered an RBI-groundout.

The Vaqueros knotted the game in the third as Brandon Pimentel laced an RBI-double into right center, plating Bryan Sturges (hit by pitch). UTRGV starter JC Ariza limited Houston to two hits and one run across 6.0 frames.

Houston continues its seven-game homestand at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when the Cougars face Lamar. As part of 2-Dollar Tuesday, fans can purchase $2 tickets at the box office on game day and take advantage of $2 nachos at the concession stand. Houston-themed Mardi Gras beads will also be given away while supplies last.
