Men’s Golf Ready to Tee Off at Cabo Collegiate Invitational

Three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Sunday morning at Cove Club Golf Course

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The University of Houston Men's Golf program continues its 2022 spring season when it tees off at the Cabo Collegiate Invitational beginning Sunday on the Cove Club Golf Course.
 
The Cougars will play 18 holes with a 9 a.m. (CST), shotgun start each day through Tuesday on the 6,807-yard, par-71 layout.
 
Houston will face #2 Arizona State, #3 Oklahoma State, #6 Texas Tech, #7 Arkansas, #8 Stanford, #10 Tennessee, #16 Mississippi, #20 Alabama, #21 Vanderbilt, #28 Arizona, #41 Florida State, #52 Baylor, California and Rice.
 
The Cougars enter this week's tournament after sweeping the team and individual titles at the Border Olympics on Feb. 14-15 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas. Houston enjoyed a 15-stroke win with a score of 12-under 852 for the 17th team championship under Director of Golf while senior Alexander Frances defeated teammate and fellow senior Andrew Gibson for the first individual title of his collegiate career.

ABOUT the COUGARS
Frances, Gibson, senior Braxton Watkins, junior Marcus Wochner and junior Austyn Reily will represent the Cougars at the Cabo Collegiate Invitational.
 
This season, Frances leads the Cougars with a 72.40 scoring average and is tied with Gibson for team-high honors with seven rounds of par or better.
 
Gibson stands a close second among the Cougars with a 72.8 average and also enjoyed a career-best finish at the Border Olympics.
 
Watkins enjoyed the best finish of his career with a sixth-place showing at the Border Olympics. Opening with a 73, the Winthrop, Ark., native lowered his score in each of the final two rounds.

For Sunday's First Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from California and Rice.
 
Frances begins his day off No. 15 with Gibson (first group off No. 16), Watkins (second group off No. 16), Wochner (No. 17) and Reily (first group off No. 18) following.

UP NEXT
Following the Cabo Collegiate Invitational, the Cougars will send two student-athletes to compete at the Colin Montgomerie HBU Husky Invitational on March 7-8 at Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring, Texas. More information about that recent addition to the Cougars' schedule will be released soon.
 
From there, the team will compete at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La., on March 14-15 before returning home to play host to Houston's All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, on March 21-22.
