Houston erases pair of large deficits in victory

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball erased a four-run deficit and five-run deficit, scoring five runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth inning, running its win streak to three games with a 16-10 victory against UTRGV in the first two games Sunday afternoon from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

The Cougars (3-3) batted around in back-to-back innings, doing so in the seventh and eighth inning. Houston's 16 runs were the most since scoring as many on March 27, 2019, at Stephen F. Austin. Houston hit .481 (13-for-27) with runners aboard.

Trailing 9-4, Houston scored seven runs between the sixth and seventh innings. Third baseman Zach Arnold crushed a two-run home run in the sixth, trimming the deficit to three. The long ball was the first on the season for the Cougars.

One inning later, the Cougars exploded for five runs, batting around while taxing three UTRGV (5-1) pitchers for five hits while taking advantage of three errors. Malachi Lott's two-run triple was followed by a game-tying RBI-double from Brandon Uhse.

Arnold put Houston ahead on an RBI-single and Ryan Hernandez plated Houston's 11th run with an RBI-single. Arnold's four RBIs matched a career high. Trevino also matched a career high with three hits.

Making his first start, Lott contributed two hits, three RBIs and drew two walks. Pinch hitter Cameron Nickens recorded his first collegiate hit, adding insurance via a two-run single in the eighth inning.

UTRGV struck three home runs and pounded out 16 hits. The Cougars erased an early four-run deficit, but the Vaqueros re-took the lead on a three-run home run from Freddy Rojas Jr. in the fourth inning.

Houston starter Nathan Medrano lasted 2.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three. UTRGV starter Jesus Aldaz lasted 1.2 innings, permitting four walks and three runs alongside one hit.

Cougar reliever Maddux Miller (1-0) earned the win, retiring all four batters he faced. Derrick Cherry earned the save, tossing 2.0 innings while allowing one hit and one run (none earned) while fanning two.

The teams close the two-game series with the doubleheader finale at 5:45 p.m. Tickets are available for as low as $10 while kids (under 12) are admitted for as low as $5. To purchase seats, click here.
