FIU Wins 8th Consecutive C-USA Championship

LYNCHBURG - FIU is headed back to Miami with their eight consecutive C-USA Swimming & Diving Championship trophy. The Panthers also swept the individual awards given at the Championship.
 
FIU’s Randy Horner was once again named the Swimming Coach of the Year for 2022. Coach Nick Yang was honored as the Diving Coach of the Year. Panther freshman Christie Chue was named Swimmer of the Meet after taking home three individual gold medals and being a part of three gold medal relay teams. Maha Gouda took home the Diver of the Meet award. Gouda placed second in both the 3-meter and 1-meter dives and took gold in the platform dive.
 
Rice took gold and silver in the 1650-yd Freestyle, as junior Shannon Campbell bested the field by a full seven seconds with a 16:43.17, and Amelia Kane won her third medal of the weekend with a 16:50.86 mark. FIU sophomore Ellie Maradyn earned the third-place spot on the podium with her time of 16:53.53. 

FIU’s Julia Miranda worked her way back to the top spot on the podium in the 200-yd Backstroke. The 2020 champion in this event won silver last year but claimed gold once again in 2022 with a time of 1:57.68. Rice sophomore Imogen Meers won the silver with a 1:57.73 mark. The final spot on the podium went to FIU’s Kelsie Campbell with a 1:58.80.

Maddy Howe from Rice captured gold in the 100-yd Freestyle with her top time of 49.63. FIU’s Elinah Phillip hit the wall just two-tenths back to earn second at 49.87. Her Panther teammate Sara Gyertyannfy landed in third place with a mark of 50.12.

In the 200-yd Breaststroke, Christie Chue won her third individual gold of the competition, fifth overall, with a 2:11.14 mark. She finished one spot ahead of FIU teammate Delanie Goll who touched the wall at 2:13.67 for silver. Reigning champion, Paige Banton of Marshall, took the bronze with a time of 2:15.00.

Rice freshman Arielle Hayon earned a gold medal for the second time this week, this time in the 200-yd Butterfly with a mark of 1:57.13. In the third-place spot, fellow Rice Owl Marta Cano Minarro finished with a time of 1:59.22. FIU senior Stephanie Hussey placed second with her 1:58.90 time.

In the diving well, Maha Gouda of FIU won her first gold medal of the championship. She posted a score of 254.20 to earn the top spot on the podium. Florida Atlantic’s Alicia Mora won silver with 244.80 points, her third individual medal of the competition. FIU’s Raquel Mason won the bronze medal with her score of 325.80.

FIU went five for five in the C-USA Championship relays, winning the 400-yd Freestyle Relay on the final night with a time of 3:17.52. The winning squad featured senior Stephanie Hussey, junior Elinah Phillip, freshman Christie Chue and senior Kelsie Campbell. Rice’s relay team posted a mark of 3:18.95 to place second, and North Texas earned bronze with a 3:23.75.
