SWIM: C-USA Championship Day 3 Recap

LYNCHBURG - The third day of the 2022 C-USA Swimming & Diving Championship has concluded. One more day of competition remains to determine our champion.

FIU remains in the hunt for their eight straight C-USA Championship, finishing day three with 733 points. Rice holds on to their second place spot with 650 points. Marshall and Florida Atlantic sit neck-and-neck for the third and fourth-place spots, with 389 and 380 points respectively. North Texas sits in fifth with 372 points, while Old Dominion is in sixth with 252. 
 
The night started with an exciting 400-yd Individual Medley race. FIU took two of the three podium spots, with Mia Zahab claiming gold with a 4:14.65 time and Stephanie Hussey winning bronze at 4:19.64. Rice freshman Amelia Kane added to her medal count, taking silver with a mark of 4:17.13.

Next came the first Butterfly final of the Championship week. Rice freshman Arielle Hayon broke a Owls program record and C-USA meet record in the 100-butterfly on her way to a gold medal with a time of 51.82. She broke former Rice Owl Casey Clark's record of 51.98, set in 2015. FIU's Kelsie Campbell took the second place spot with a 52.84 mark, followed in third by teammate Julia Miranda at 52.87. 

Rice claimed their second gold of the evening in the 200-yd Freestyle when Marta Cano Minarro posted a 1:46.90 time, over a second ahead of the rest of the field. Her teammate, junior Lauren McDougall, added to the Owls' medals with a siler medal time of 1:48.19. FIU's Lamija Medosevic took the third-place spot with a mark of 1:49.26

FIU swept the podium in the 100-yd Breaststroke. Freshman standout Christie Chue won the gold medal with a 1:00.28 time. 2020 champion in this event, Sara Gyertyannfy, swam a 1:00.98 to take second. Her teammate, reigning 2021 champion, Delaine Goll took the bronze with a mark of 1:01.64.

Rice added a third gold medal on day three in the 100-yd Backstroke. Junior Zoe Spitz won the event with a 53.79 mark. FIU swimmers rounded out the last two spots on the podium with Michaela Trnkova taking second (53.97) and Julia Miranda taking third (54.28).

Next, the competition headed over to the diving well for the 1-meter dive competition. FIU took gold and silver in the event. Mandy Song posted a 338.65 to land atop the podium. Fellow Panther Maha Gouda won silver with a score of 329.75. After winning last night's 3-meter dive competition, Florida Atlantic's Alicia Mora took bronze and set a program record once again with her 317.55 mark in the 1-meter. 

FIU won their fourth relay of this C-USA Championship with their gold medal performance in the 400-Medley Relay with a time of 3:36.15. The winning relay squad was made up of Kelsie Campbell, Christie Chue, Julia Miranda and Stephanie Hussey. Rice took second place in the relay with a 3:40.12 mark, and Marshall took the last spot on the podium at 3:43.68.

The 2022 C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships will resume Saturday, February 26, with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m. ET. Our last day of finals will begin at 6 p.m. ET streamed live for free on CUSA.tv. The event will conclude with a final awards presentation in the evening.
