It’s Election Day – Only 3% Seem To Care

It's election day in Texas, and hopefully more people will turn out and vote than they are expecting.

A report by the Texas Tribune notes that only 3% of Texans vote in the primary, deciding who governs for the other 97%.

"Part of it is because I don't think normal people are necessarily as partisan as the rest of us, or as people who are really involved in politics" said Ross Ramsey, executive editor with the Texas Tribune, "It's easier in November to say I'm with this party, or that party, and to go from there. A lot of Texans just don't see the primaries as important as the general election."

One possible plus about this years election. The 'red wave' that is rolling across the country.

"What we saw in early voting was that turnout on the Republican side was up compared to 2018, where it was down on the Democrats side" said Rice University professor Mark Jones, "I think there is more enthusiasm on the Republicans side, than on the Democrats side."

Will we see that same enthusiasm in person? Well, even though the Governor's race is a nothing burger, there are some notable races.

Statewide, Ramsey tells KTRH "I'm watching the Attorney General's race where Ken Paxton has 3 strong challengers, the Railroad Commissioner Race, and Sid Miller the Agriculture Commissioner has some hard competition."

And then locally, professor Jones told KTRH, "In Houston we have congressional district 38 which was tailor made for Republican Wesley Hunt, but he's being challenged by Mark Ramsey who has quite a bit of support from the right wing of the party. At the same time, at the Harris County level, Republicans will be choosing their County Judge candidate to go up against Lina Hidalgo."

The turnout is expected to be even worse for any runoffs, which will be held on May 24th.

Either way, be sure and tune in for full election night coverage tonight, on news radio 740 KTRH.
