Baseball Travels to Rice for Four-Game Series

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball heads to the state of Texas for a four-game series with Rice University on CUSA.TV with game one on Friday, Mar. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET, a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 5 beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET, and game four on Sunday, Mar. 6 at 1:00 p.m. ET as the Crimson comes off an opening weekend in which it defeated No. 24 Miami in its season opener.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (1-2) plays a four-game set against the Owls (2-6) at Reckling Park with Rice in the midst of a 17-game home stand.
  • Harvard's weekend probable starters include junior RHP Adam Stone (0-0, 4.50 ERA) in game one, junior LHP Tim Williamson (0-0, 3.00 ERA) in game two, senior RHP Jaren Zinn (0-1, 63.00 ERA) in game three, and junior RHP Will Jacobsen (0-0, 3.00 ERA) in game four. Rice is set to throw RHP Cooper Chandler (0-2, 10.80 ERA) in game one, RHP Roel Garcia (0-0, 9.45 ERA) in game two, TBA in game three, and LHP Thomas Burbank (0-1, 11.25 ERA) in game four.
  • Harvard trails the all-time series with Rice, 0-4. The two teams met in a series in March 2002 prior to a meeting in the NCAA tournament in that same season.
  • Harvard opened its 2022 season over the weekend of Feb. 25-27 after a 719-day wait, starting the year with an 11-6 victory over No. 24 Miami. The Crimson dropped a narrow 2-1 decision in game two before a 10-0 setback in game three. Junior Zach Brown, sophomore Chris Snopek, and first-year Sawer Feller all hit home runs in the series.
  • Over the course of the Miami series, Harvard had 13 student-athletes make their collegiate debuts. Nine of the Crimson's 13 players to appear in game one appeared in a college game for the first time.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy hit .333 (3-for-9) in the Miami series with two runs scored and a double.
  • Junior Zach Brown tallied a team-high three RBIs in the Miami series. In game one, he went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run that gave the Crimson a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning.
  • First-year Sawyer Feller finished 3-for-11 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and his first collegiate home run in the Miami series.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek totaled three hits, three runs scored, two RBIs, and his first career home run against Miami.
  • First-year right-handed pitcher Sean Matson threw 4.0 innings of relief in game two, permitting just one run on two hits with six strikeouts.
  • Over the course of the weekend, senior Jack Mahala and sophomores Uday Narottam, Jay Driver, and Chris Clark all pitched one or more innings of relief without permitting a run.
  • Junior right-hander Adam Stone made his collegiate debut, starting game one against Miami on the mound. He struck out four batters over 4.0 innings.
  • Junior Logan Bravo will serve as one of the Crimson's captains in 2022. Bravo started all six games for Harvard in 2020 after playing in 20 games with 16 starts in 2019. Playing for the North Shore Navigators in the NECBL this past summer, Bravo tallied 14 home runs, 32 RBIs, and a .287 batting average in 39 games.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen will act as a co-captain for the Crimson this season. Jacobsen made starts in all six games for Harvard in 2020 while also making two relief appearances on the mound. This past summer, Jacobsen played in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the Cotuit Kettleers, making eight appearances and three starts as a pitcher.
  • This past July, junior right-handed pitcher Adam Stone completed a summer tour with the Team USA Collegiate National Team, which included an 11-game intrasquad Stars vs. Stripes series from July 2-15 before concluding with a three-game series against the U.S. Olympic Team from July 18-20.

Bill Decker, The Joseph J. O'Donnell '67 Head Coach for Harvard Baseball, enters his 10th season as the leader of the Crimson. The 2019 Ivy League Coach of the Year and 2019 NEIBA Coach of the Year led the Crimson to the 2019 Ivy League title. He holds a 126-173 record at Harvard and a 623-430 career record as a collegiate head coach.

Next Up

Following the Rice series, Harvard begins a 10-day, eight-game road trip to the state of California with a four-game series against Cal Poly. The Crimson will play game one on Friday, March 11 at 9:00 p.m. ET, a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 starting at 4:00 p.m. ET, and game four on Sunday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
