Baseball’s Stone, Smith, Driver Combine for Shutout of Rice, 3-0

HOUSTON, Texas – Junior right-handed pitcher Adam Stone did not allow a run over five innings in the start, and first-year Tanner Smith and sophomore Jay Driver each threw two innings of scoreless relief as Harvard University baseball shutout Rice University, 3-0, on Friday night at Reckling Park.
 
In the first game of a four-game set, the Crimson (2-2) took a 2-0 lead through three innings and added an insurance run in the ninth while Harvard's pitching staff totaled 15 strikeouts against the host Owls (2-7).
 
Earning his first collegiate win, Stone threw 5.0 innings, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts to two walks. Smith tossed the sixth and seventh innings, permitting one hit with three strikeouts. Driver came on for his first collegiate save, hurling the final two frames and tallying four strikeouts against one hit and no walks.
 
At the plate, first-year second baseman George Cooper posted three hits, junior first baseman Logan Bravo compiled two hits, an RBI, and a run, and first-year designated hitter Sawyer Feller notched two hits and an RBI.
 
After Bravo hit a double to lead off the second inning, Feller brought him home with a single up the middle. Harvard took a 2-0 lead in the third frame as Bravo hit an RBI single to bring in sophomore Jake Berger. The Crimson gained insurance in the ninth as sophomore Chris Snopek came home on an error.
