Action ramps up with two midweek contests

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball pays a visit to cross-town rival Rice and hosts Southern in midweek action this week. The Cougars head to Reckling Park for a 6:30 p.m. contest against the Owls on Tuesday before hosting the Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
 
Houston (7-4) and Rice (3-9) renew acquaintances with the Silver Glove Series on the line. For the first time since 1971, the programs did not meet a season ago. The Cougars claimed the Silver Glove in 2018 before the Owls bounced back in 2019.
 
Houston and Southern are meeting for the first time Wednesday. Adult tickets are available for as low as $10 while kids' tickets (12 and under) are $5. To purchase, click here. Following Wednesday, the Cougars will embark on a four-game road trip.

NEED TO KNOW
After dropping its first three contests of the season, Houston has won seven of its last eight games. During the eight-game stretch, Houston has batted .400 (6-for-15) with the bases loaded and .349 (45-for-129) with runners aboard.
 
After hitting just two home runs through its first eight games of the season, the Cougars clubbed five against Incarnate Word in a series win over the weekend. Houston stole 10 bases in 13 attempts. The Cougars hit .324 (11-for-34) with two outs. 
 
Houston leads The American in triples (4). The Cougars are second in stolen bases (16), fielding percentage (.980) and walks allowed per nine innings (3.32). Houston is third in walks (54).
 
UP NEXT
Houston opens a four-game road trip with three contests at Louisiana from M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park in Lafayette, La. All three matchups can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on The Varsity Network. Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m. Saturday's middle game gets underway at 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale starts at 1 o'clock.
