WBB: C-USA Postseason Awards Announced

DALLAS – Conference USA announced its postseason Women’s Basketball All-Conference, All-Freshman, All-Defensive Teams along with the Superlative Awards (Newcomer, Sixth Player, Defensive, Freshman, Player and Coach).  The C-USA awards are voted on by the league’s coaches, sports information directors and a media represented from each school.
 
Charlotte’s Octavia Jett-Wilson became the first Charlotte 49er to win Player of the Year in program history, while WKU’s Mya Meredith, who won four Freshman of the Week awards this season, is the Freshman of the Year and Charlotte head coach Cara Consuegra claimed the Coach of the Year honor for the first time in her career after leading the 49ers to the East Division Regular Season Title.
 
Jett-Wilson, who was named the Co-Preseason C-USA Player of the Year, had a stellar season as she reached double-figures in 24 games, including 13 20+point nights. She finished C-USA play averaging 19.0 points per game. Meredith won C-USA Freshman of the Week four times in her first season and averaged 12.73 points, the most by a C-USA freshman this season, even with her season being cut short due to injury. Consuegra led Charlotte to a 15-3 record in league action and its first outright title since the 2002-03 season.
 
Charlotte’s KeKe McKinney was named the Defensive Player of the Year after helping Charlotte keep teams to a league-best 53.49 points per game in conference action. She was also second in rebounding pulling down 8.7 a night and is the first 49er to earn the honor. Middle Tennessee’s Ksenyia Malashka was named the Sixth Player of the Year, becoming the first Blue Raider to win the award since the 2017 season. Malashka averaged 12.9 points off the bench and was sixth in blocks averaging 1.3 per night. The Newcomer of the Year honor was given to Southern Miss’ Domonique Davis as she averaged 14.8 ppg, added 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game with a 1.49 assist to turnover ratio which ranked fifth in the league.
 
The C-USA All-First Team consisted of Charlotte’s Jett-Wilson, LA Tech’s Keiuanna Walker, Marshall’s Savannah Wheeler, Old Dominion’s Iggy Allen and Ajah Wayne, Southern Miss’ Domonique Davis, UAB’s Zakyia Weathersby and WKU’s Meral Abdelgawad.  

Seven of the eight First Team selections are guards while five are repeat All-Conference honorees from a year ago in Jett-Wilson (First Team), Allen (First Team), Walker (Second Team), Wheeler (Second Team) and Weathersby (Second Team).
 
The five honorees for the All-Defensive Team were KeKe McKinney (Charlotte), Alexis Whittington (Middle Tennessee), Zakyia Weathersby (UAB), Jaydn Pimentel (UTSA), and  Meral Abdelgawad (WKU).
 
While Middle Tennessee’s Anastasiia Boldyreva and Jalynn Gregory, along with Rice’s Malia Fisher, WKU’s Alexis Mead and Mya Meredith were named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
 
Additionally, the 2021-22 Coaches Circle consists of: Brooke Stoehr (LA Tech), Rick Insell (Middle Tennessee), DeLisha Milton-Jones (ODU) and Joye Lee-McNelis (Southern Miss). Coaches who received at least one vote earn a spot in the Coaches Circle.
