Houston takes Silver Glove Series opener

HOUSTON – After not meeting a season ago, Houston and Rice made up for the extended delay with expanded entertainment in the return of the Silver Glove Series on Tuesday night.

Houston junior Brandon Uhse unlocked a six-all tie in the eighth inning, driving a two-out, two-run double into right field to lift the Cougars to a 10-7 win in a back-and-forth, and at times wacky, nearly four-hour affair from Reckling Park.

Uhse, who finished with a career high four RBIs, drove the game-winning double off the top of the wall in right field. Houston's Zach Arnold added insurance courtesy an RBI-single in a contest that saw Rice (3-10) commit five errors and plunk as many Cougar batters.

The Cougars (8-4) produced three multi-run innings including a three-run fourth in which Uhse provided a two-out, two-run double that temporarily gave Houston a 5-2 lead. Despite allowing seven runs, Houston pitching held the Owls batters to 4-for-18 (.222) with runners aboard.

Anthony Tulimero extended his reached-base streak to 12 games, putting Houston ahead 2-0 on a looping single into shallow left center in the first. He led off the fourth with a single and came home to score on a wild pitch and pair of errors.

Houston reliever Logan Clayton (1-2) earned the victory, allowing one hit while striking out two in 1.0 scoreless frame. The right-hander stranded the go-ahead run at third base courtesy of a strikeout in the seventh inning.

Fellow Cougar reliever Ben Sears secured his second save, working the final 2.0 frames while working around four hits and permitting one run. The right-hander left the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning.

After walking the bases loaded in the second inning, Houston starter Jose Torrealba escaped the jam, inducing consecutive flyouts to center field to preserve the 2-0 advantage. The southpaw allowed three runs in 2.0 innings alongside five walks and a strikeout.

After Rice tied things at five-all, Houston re-took the lead in the sixth thanks to a pair of Owl miscues. Cameron Nickens took advantage of a three-base Owls' error in right field. With two away, the freshman raced home on a wild pitch.

Houston scored 10-plus runs for the fourth time in the last eight games. Four players registered multiple hits including Tulimero (3), Arnold (2), Ian McMillan (2) and Uhse (2). For a second consecutive game, Nickens plated three runs.
