Tech falls to Mississippi State, 11-5

BILOXI, Miss. – In the first of two games at MGM Park, No. 17 Texas Tech fell 11-5 to No. 23 Mississippi State on Tuesday night. The two programs square off at 5 p.m. Wednesday to wrap up the two-game midweek series.

Mississippi State sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored nine runs off of six hits to take a commanding 9-1 lead. The Red Raiders would narrow the deficit to as little as five – in the top of the eighth – but never closer.

Texas Tech starter Chase Hampton faced one batter above the minimum through the first three innings. But in the fourth, a leadoff hit-by-pitch, followed by a single and a tough full-count walk to the third batter had the Bulldogs' first run of the night 90 feet from home. Hampton walked the next batter that scored the Bulldogs' first run and from there, Texas Tech called to Trendan Parish in the bullpen. The freshman struck out the first batter he faced but a series of five-straight hits, the last being a 3-run home run, put the Bulldogs in firm control.

Jace Jung had a strong effort, leading the team from the plate going 3-of-5 from the plate. He was a triple short of the cycle as he homered for the third time this season (watch). In the first, he also made a SportsCenter-worthy defensive play to steal a hit from Mississippi State (watch).

Texas Tech kept fighting throughout the contest despite the fourth inning letdown. The Red Raiders scored at least once in the sixth (1), seventh (1) and eighth (2) innings. Owen Washburn tripled for the first time in his career in the sixth to score a run, Parker Kelly homered for the fourth time in the last four days (watch) in the seventh, and Jung hit a solo HR and Washburn tallied his second RBI of the game (watch) in the eighth.
