In late November 2021, the theater world went dark. Though theaters across the nation typically shut off the lights and close the doors on Monday, there was an exception. The day marked the passing of a musical theater icon whose music and stories have reached millions across the world.

The death of Stephen Sondheim rang throughout the stages across the globe. Hundreds had gathered to sing songs and celebrate the great lyricist and composer.

On March 17, at 7:30 p.m., the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center will hold its own celebration of Stephen Sondheim in the Kaplan Theatre with music, laughs, tears and joy. “Celebrating the Life and Work of a Musical Titan” is a one-night-only lecture and cabaret, highlighting the work of the late, great Sondheim.

This evening was conceived by and is directed by Debra Dickinson, Rice University’s lecturer in the History of Musical Theatre. Dickinson was a professional singer/actress in New York for 15 years before beginning her career as a director.

She has performed opposite Richard Burton and Richard Harris in “Camelot,” and in the German-language production of “Cats” in Vienna, Austria.

This fascinating evening of theater is not to be missed. Alongside Dickinson, guiding the cast through the difficult composition is Adam Stout, a freelance pianist and a musical tour de force. This lecture and cabaret is enhanced by the strong and bold performances of Brad Goertz, Chelsea Ryan McCurdy and Stephanie Myers.

Come to the J to hear Sondheim’s greatest hits – from the heart-wrenching and comedic music of “Company” to the absurdity of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” This is an evening of theater that will make your heart soar.
