Tech sweeps series at Rice

March 13, 2022 | Baseball

HOUSTON – The No. 17 Texas Tech baseball team completed a three-game road series sweep of Rice on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Owls 7-4 at Reckling Park. The Red Raiders return home winning four of five games during their seven-day road trip.

The Red Raiders battled back from behind in the finale, falling behind 4-1 after Rice scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth inning, the bullpen arms of Kyle Robinson, Colin Clark, Jamie Hitt and Trendan Parish cooled down the Owls' bats, while the Red Raiders' bats heated up.

Between the fifth and ninth innings, the bullpen quartet of the aforementioned retired 17 of the final 18 Owls that went to the plate to close the game, and 16 in a row between the fifth and ninth innings (watch) – the second to last batter singled with two outs in the ninth to end the streak. Robinson was credited with the win while Parish picked up his fifth save of the season.

Texas Tech scored two runs in the fifth, narrowing Rice's lead to 4-3. Hudson White singled to lead off the fifth, and advanced to second behind a sacrifice bunt from Dillon Carter. Zac Vooletich, Cole Stilwell and Jace Jung would each hit singles (watch) with a runner in scoring position, which produced two runs.

In the sixth, Vooletich provided a two-RBI double (watch) to put Texas Tech in front 5-4 and the lead would never be relinquished. Carter, who worked an 0-2 count during the at-bat before Vooletich, was hit-by-pitch with the count full to load the bases. He added a third-run taking advantage of a wild pitch after Vooletich advanced him to third base.

Hudson White added an insurance run in the seventh with his third hit (watch), and second double in the contest. He reached base in his first four appearances to the plate and led Texas Tech with three hits going 3-of-4 from the dish with a walk and three runs scored.

Vooletich, Stilwell, and Owen Washburn joined White having a multi-hit day with two apiece. Vooletich and Stilwell each led the team with two RBIs each.

Rice scored first, in the first inning taking a 1-0 lead, marking their first lead during the three-game series. Tech tied the game in the third thanks to a pair of doubles (watch) from White and Stilwell.

The Red Raiders have won seven straight against Rice, and improved their all-time series record to 63-56 against their former Southwest Conference foe.

The 2022 team has won 13 of their last 14 games and improved to 14-3.
