HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team picked up their 10
th win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Rice Owls 4-2 in Houston.
Despite struggles in doubles play throughout the season, the Mavericks were able to take the needed doubles point over the Owls for the early lead.
Alan Sau Franco and
Maks Lukman took line two quickly with a 6-1 win. The final two matches came down to the final point. With courts one and three tied at 6-6,
Miguel Cabrera and
Anton Shepp were able to get the Mavs over the hump, taking line one 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the Mavericks point.
The Owls quickly evened things up, taking court one over
Alan Sau Franco 6-1, 6-2 before taking the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lukman at court five.
Those would be the lone points for the Owls, however, as
Miguel Cabrera,
Solano Caffarena and
Daichi Akiyoshi finished the match for the Mavericks.
Cabrera tied the match at two with a 6-3, 6-2 win before Caffarena helped UTA overtake Rice with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court six. Needing just one more win, Akiyoshi gutted out a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory at line three to give the Mavericks the 4-2 victory over Rice.
