Niners Start Conference Play with Win over North Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 41-ranked Charlotte 49ers women's tennis program picked up a 5-2 victory over North Texas on Friday evening (March 11) in the Niner's first Conference USA dual of the spring.

Charlotte improves to 11-2 on the season with the win and has now won nine in a row. The Niners are off to the best start in program history since the 2011-12 season when the Green and White went 12-1 in their first 13 matches.

The Niners took the doubles point with wins at the first and third flights. Rocio Safont and Lucie Petruzelova started the team off on the right foot with a 6-1 victory in the third spot and Charlotte's top flight secured the point shortly after. The newly No. 31-ranked tandem of Margaux Maquet and Lucia Quiterio – the highest ranking any Charlotte duo has had – improved to 10-1 on the year and won their seventh match in a row with a 6-3 decision in the first spot for the point. The Niners' second pairing of Ruxi Schech and Kaavya Sawhney were one game away from winning as well at 5-2 when the point was secured and their match left unfinished.

Quiterio made it 2-0 for the Niners with a pair of 6-1 wins at the third spot in singles to pick up her team-best ninth win of the season and push her winning streak to seven straight. Safont wasn't far behind Quiterio and put Charlotte one point away from clinching with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the fourth spot. Safont is now 5-0 when playing in the fourth position and has won her last six matches. No. 120-ranked Maquet got back into the win column to secure the match for Charlotte with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the top spot.

After Maquet clinched the point, the teams played out the rest of the matches using a third-set super tiebreak. Sawhney was the only one of the three Niners that came out on top in the tiebreak, winning her match 6-2, 3-6, 10-2.
