Tulane Women’s Tennis Falls on the Road to Houston

HOUSTON – The Tulane University women's tennis dropped its first match of the weekend in Texas as it fell to Houston 4-2 on Saturday. The Green Wave tried to bounce back after falling behind 3-0 by picking up back-to-back singles points, but the comeback was not to be for the Wave on the afternoon.

With the loss, Tulane drops to 7-5 overall on the season and 1-3 in road matches this year.

"We played almost a five hour match and we were so close to making a comeback," head coach Maria Brito said. "I am so proud of this team for their fight and heart that each player put in to every single point of each match today. We will be ready to bounce back tomorrow."

Doubles play got away from the Green Wave quickly as the Cougars picked up a 6-0 win on court one to take the early advantage. The pairings of Mackenzie Clark and Kristen Borland and Adelaide Lavery and Jiayun Zhu battled hard in tight matches on courts two and three, but Sophie Gerits and Elena Trencheva managed to come out on top for Houston on court three to take the doubles point.

Moving into singles action Houston kept the momentum to secure the first two wins and take a 3-0 advantage on Tulane. The Wave did go away without a fight as Zhu put Tulane on the board with a two-set win over Gabriela Girald 6-3, 6-0. Lahari Yelamanchili followed with a three-set victory over Laura Slisane to pull the Green Wave to within one. Clark and Lavery continued to battle in the third set on each of their courts, but ultimately the fourth and deciding point fell to the Cougars.

Up nest, the Green Wave will stay in Houston to take on No. 47 Rice on Sunday. The match between Tulane and the Owls is set for 11 a.m. CT at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Fans can watch the match by CLICKING HERE or follow with live stats by CLICKING HERE.
