Cougars, Bearkats renew rivalry in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Houston Baseball and Sam Houston renew the battle for the Sanders Cup when the squads face off in midweek action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Bearkats' Don Sanders Stadium.
 
The matchup will be the first since 2019 between the programs. The clubs will play three times over the course of the season for the Sanders Cup, which honors Don Sanders, a Houston philanthropist and supporter who has made contributions to both programs.
 
Houston (13-7) is coming off a 3-1 week and series win against Columbia. The Cougars hit .337 in the series, led by American Hitter of the Week Zach Arnold who batted a scorching .538 (7-for-13) with four runs, three RBIs and two doubles.
 
Sam Houston (12-8) opened WAC play by dropping 2 of 3 at Lamar over the weekend. The Bearkats, who rank 23rdnationally in batting average (.312), own wins against Baylor, Oklahoma State and Nebraska on the early season.

NEED TO KNOW
Houston is a perfect 5-0 during the midweek with wins at McNeese (Feb. 22), vs. Lamar (March 1), at Rice (March 8), vs. Southern (March 9) and at Texas A&M (March 15). During five midweek contests, Houston pitching has registered a 3.40 ERA, limiting teams to a .229 average.
 
Houston leads the all-time series against Sam Houston, 85-84, dating to 1947. The Cougars have won three straight games (2019-present) vs. the Bearkats. Houston's last four-game win streak in the series was 1999-2008 (13 consecutive).
 
Brandon Uhse is riding a 16-game hit streak and a 17-game on-base streak. Anthony Tulimero has reached base in 19 of 20 games. Arnold has reached base in 17 of 20 games.
 
UP NEXT
The Cougars open an eight-game homestand with a three-game set against Western Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Friday from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park. Saturday's middle game is set for 6:30 p.m. and Sunday's finale starts at 1 p.m.
