HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (11-10-1, 1-3 C-USA) fell in the series opener on Friday afternoon, 7-2, at the Kennedy Center to the Rice Owls (7-16, 2-2 C-USA).

Rice's Pierce Gallo scored the first run of the game on a homer to right in the top of the second seeing the Herd trail 1-0. The Owls then tallied two more runs in the top of the third with one coming on an Austin Bulman home run.
Marshall answered in the bottom half of the inning as Christian Lucio smashed a 1-0 offering over the fence in right for his first long ball of the season. One batter later, Luke Edwards cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with his fifth dinger of the year.
Purnell settled in and threw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth. He proceeded to strike out the side in the top of the fifth, but Bulman hit his second homer of the game in the inning as the Herd trailed 4-2.
Reliever Chad Heiner came on to begin the top of the sixth and stranded runners at first and second with a strikeout to end the frame.
