Islanders Open Road Trip Against Rice

HOUSTON, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team begins a seven-game road streak against Rice 6:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Reckling Park.

"Rice gets a roster of high-profile recruits, probably a lot of them out of Houston," said head coach Scott Malone. "They're going to get after us whether they're in the lead or we're on the lead. We'll have to bring our A-game."

The Islanders are coming off of their fifth series win of the season against UIW, winning the series 2-1 and run ruling them in the first game of the series. They have also defeated UT Arlington, Prairie View A&M, Stephen F. Austin and Nebraska in three-game series this season.

Sophomore Brendan Ryan continues to remain the best batter on the team through 26 games, batting 39 for 102, earning 25 runs and 18 runs batted in. He's tied for seventh in all of Division I baseball in stolen bases with a perfect 18-18 record on steal attempts while sitting fourth in hit by pitches, being hit 13 times. Both he and senior Steven Rivera-Chijin have the most doubles on the team at nine apiece.

Tyler Linneweber, a transfer shortstop, sits atop the Southland Conference in sacrifice bunts, having five credited to him. Fellow sophomore Josh Caraway is first in the conference and 12th in the nation having blasted three triples thus far. Max Puls, a sophomore, is right behind him in second with two, sitting 61st in the nation.

A&M-Corpus Christi leads the conference in doubles on the season, combining for 48 to sit 55th in the nation. They also lead the conference in shutouts, owning two on the season, both of them coming against Prairie View A&M.

The game will be Wednesday before the team heads to take on Northwestern State at Brown-Stroud Field in the second conference team they will face. The Islanders and the Demons are tied for second place, both holding a 2-1 conference record.
