Houston wraps up regular season conference action with victory
WICHITA, Kan. – Houston Tennis earned a 5-2 victory against conference rival Wichita State on Friday afternoon in Wichita, Kansas, at the Coleman Tennis Complex.
Houston (12-9, 2-2 American) went to Wichita State (6-12, 0-5 American), looking to pick up a final regular season conference win. Houston started the day off strong in doubles play, followed by a tough singles match up.
DOUBLES PLAY
Sophie Gerits and Laura Slisane blanked their rivals, Natsumi Kurahashi and Clara Whitaker, 6-0 on Court 2. Maria Dzemeshkevich and Elena Trencheva were awarded the win on Court 3 by default.
SINGLES PLAY
Gabriela Giraldo earned the first singles point by default on Court 6. Blanca Cortijo Parreno gave Houston a 3-0 lead by defeating Clara Whitaker (6-0, 6-2) on Court 5.
Gerits defeated her foe Harriet Hamilton in both sets (6-2, 6-2). This victory marked Gertis' eighth consecutive singles match this season and her 12th singles win on the season. Slisane's actions on Court 2 helped seal the victory for the Cougars against LingWei Kong (6-4, 6-3).
Wichita State earned one of its two points of the day on Court 3 with Jessie Zheng defeating Azul Pedemonti in both sets (6-2, 6-4).
The Shockers' second point was decided in the final matchup on Court 1 with Kurahashi defeating Dzemeshkevich in a tough matchup. Dzemeshkevich won the first set, 6-2, and Kurahashi won the second, 7-6 (10-8). The match was decided in a tiebreaker set with Kurahashi giving Wichita State its second point of the day, 1-0 (10-8).
