Houston, Sam Houston meet Tuesday

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball looks to secure the Don Sanders Cup when it faces Sam Houston in the second of three meetings this season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
 
The Cougars (19-9), who took 2 of 3 from Wichita State in their American opening series over the weekend, defeated Sam Houston, 9-1 in the Sanders Cup opener on March 22. The Bearkats won the first two editions (2017-18) of the Sanders Cup before Houston swept the three-game set in 2019.
 
Sam Houston (16-12) is looking to bounce back after dropping 2 of 3 to UTRGV in WAC play over the weekend. The Bearkats rank 20th nationally in batting average (.305) and are 24th in hits (295). The program has scored 10-plus runs in three of the last five games.

Houston is a perfect 7-0 during the midweek, outscoring opponents, 56-22, including a 13-1 victory against Prairie View last Tuesday, thanks to a season-high 19 hits.
 
Houston leads the all-time series against Sam Houston, 86-84, dating to 1947. The Cougars have won four straight games (2019-present) against the Bearkats. Houston's last five-game win streak in the series was from 1999-2008 (13 straight).
 
Houston wraps its eight-game homestand on Tuesday against Sam Houston. The Cougars are 5-2 on the current homestand, 14-4 overall at home and 12-3 in home non-conference games. From March 18-April 24, Houston plays 19 of 23 games at home.
