Cougars host Shockers in league-opening series

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball turns its attention to American Athletic Conference play when the program hosts Wichita State in the league opener at 6:30 p.m. Friday from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park. 
 
Saturday's middle game is set for 6:30 p.m. and Sunday's finale starts at 1 o'clock. The Cougars will celebrate 75 Years of Houston Athletics with a "75-year celebration" Coke bottle giveaway set for Saturday.
 
Houston (17-8) enters league play second among all conference schools in overall wins. The Cougars have won six of their last seven contests including producing a season-high 19 hits during Tuesday's 13-1 win against Prairie View.
 
Wichita State (11-13) rebounded after dropping its first six games of the season including capturing Frisco College Baseball Classic title with victories against Iowa, Washington State and Texas A&M. The Shockers are coming off a third-place league finish in 2021, their best since joining The American in 2017.

Houston Baseball will be celebrating 75 years of Houston Athletics all weekend highlighted by a commemorative Coke bottle giveaway on Saturday. Tickets for each game are priced at just $7.50.
 
Friday is "713 Night" at the ballpark where fans can buy $7 tickets at the box office and take advantage of $7.13 Tex-Mex Nachos at the concession stand. A Houston win on Saturday means fans in attendance walk away with a buy one, get one free box combo offer courtesy of Raising Cane's.
 
Come out for Kids Day and Family Day at the ballpark on Sundays. Kids (12 and under) get in free with their youth jersey and may run the bases postgame.

NEED TO KNOW
The Cougars and Shockers have met 52 times with Houston holding a 32-20 all-time advantage. From 1997-2019, Houston won eight of nine games including eight straight. During 2021, Wichita State won eight of nine including eight straight.
 
Houston finished 13-5 in the month of March, led by a 9-3 mark at home. The Cougars batted .304 as a team and swiped 31 bases in 44 attempts. The 13 wins were the most for Houston in March since winning as many games during March 2017.
 
Houston opens its eighth season of American Athletic Conference play on Friday. The Cougars are 10-12 all-time on AAC opening weekend and are looking for their first conference opening weekend series win since 2018.
 
UP NEXT
Houston wraps its eight-game homestand with a visit from Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Cougars, who defeated the Bearkats, 9-1, in Huntsville, Texas, on March 22, are one win shy of securing the Don Sanders Cup. 
 
As part of 2-Dollar Tuesday, fans can purchase $2 tickets at the box office on game day and take advantage of $2 nachos at the concession stand.
