Cougars, Bearcats clash in Week 2 of league play

CINCINNATI – Houston Baseball hits the road for the first time in American Athletic Conference play, visiting Cincinnati for a three-game series beginning at 4 p.m. CT Friday from UC Baseball Stadium. 
 
Saturday's middle game is slated for 3 p.m. CT and Sunday's finale gets underway at 11 a.m. CT. All three games can be seen on ESPN+. Cougar fans can catch Jeremy Branham on the call via The Varsity Network.
 
The Cougars (20-9, 2-1 American) took 2 of 3 from Wichita State on Opening Weekend of conference play. Houston has won five of its last six contests and is a perfect 8-0 during the midweek after capturing the Sanders Cup with an 8-6 win against Sam Houston Tuesday.
 
Cincinnati (11-16, 1-2 American) dropped 2 of 3 against East Carolina a weekend ago. The Bearcats have clubbed a conference-best 41 homers. The team also paces The American in batting average (.284) and slugging percentage (.493).

NEED TO KNOW
Houston and Cincinnati are meeting for the 56th time Friday with the Cougars holding a 40-15 all-time advantage since the series began in 1958. This weekend marks Houston's first visit to Cincinnati since March 30-31, 2018.
 
The Cougars have been particularly impressive this season when it matters most. Houston is hitting .306 (137-for-448) with runners aboard and .400 (14-for-35) with the bases loaded. Houston has registered double-digit hits in 10 of its last 13 games.
 
Houston catcher Anthony Tulimero continues to impress at the plate and behind it. The catcher leads the Cougars with a .365 average and is second on the team with seven stolen bases. He is also pacing The American with 15 runners caught stealing.
 
UP NEXT
Houston opens an eight-game homestand when it hosts UTRGV at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The matchup will be the third this season between the two programs with Houston taking both prior matchups, 16-10, and 3-1.
