Houston improves to 10-5 in league play with win

TAMPA, Fla. – University of Houston redshirt junior Ian McMillan hit two home runs and the Cougars scored in five different innings, capping a three-game sweep of South Florida with a 9-2 win on Sunday morning from USF Baseball Stadium.

McMillan left the yard in consecutive innings, including a three-run home run in the third inning, unlocking a two-all tie. The sweep was the first for Houston (29-15, 10-5 American) in American Athletic Conference play since April 12-14, 2019, at Wichita State.

Houston outscored South Florida (23-19, 4-10 American) 28-9 in the three-game series. The Cougars, who have won four of their first five conference series, matched East Carolina with a league-leading 10 conference victories. The Pirates wrap their series against Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon.

After the Bulls tied the contest on a two-run double in the second, the Cougars scored the next seven runs, tacking on with redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold's solo home run and redshirt sophomore Anthony Tulimero's RBI-double in the sixth inning.

Cougar junior starter Nathan Medrano (6-3) held South Florida to two runs on five hits alongside one walk and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The right-hander has allowed two-or-fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight starts.

South Florida redshirt sophomore starter Ethan Brown allowed five runs on three hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Offensively, the Bulls batted just .167 (3 for 18) with runners aboard.

Houston sophomore reliever Jackson Dannelley pitched 2.0 scoreless, holding the Bulls at bay including stranding two in the eighth. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out a pair. Junior Ben Sears allowed one hit, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
