Cougar third baseman named player of week

HOUSTON – University of Houston redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold has been named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after batting .474 (9 for 19) with three home runs, the league office announced Monday.

The third baseman helped the Cougars to a 3-1 week highlighted by a three-game sweep at South Florida, vaulting Houston into second place in The American standings at 1.0 game back of league-leader East Carolina.

Arnold logged three multi-hit performances including a 4-for-5 outing, finishing a triple shy of the cycle in Houston's 13-2 run-rule victory on Saturday. The Temecula, Calif., native logged at least one RBI in all four games and homered in three of four contests.

Cougar junior starter Nathan Medrano was also named to the league's honor roll after allowing two runs in 6.0 innings against the Bulls. The Gilroy, Calif., native held South Florida to a .154 average (2 for 13) with runners aboard while earning the victory.
