Houston, Rice tangle in Game 2 of cross-town rivalry

HOUSTON – University of Houston Baseball looks to capture its sixth Silver Glove Series title, and second in the last three chances, when it takes on cross-town rival Rice at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

The Cougars (29-15), who secured the Silver Glove opener, 10-7, at Rice on March 8, have won five of their last six contests including a three-game sweep at South Florida over the weekend. Houston paces The American in batting average (.287) and walks allowed per nine innings (3.33). The Cougars are second in fielding percentage (.981).

The Owls (13-30) took 2 of 3 over the weekend against Western Kentucky as Rice clinched its first home conference series victory since 2019. Rice has lost seven of its last eight games on the road including all three contests two weekends ago at Southern Miss.

Houston and Rice are meeting for the 193rd time in a series that dates to 1948. The Owls lead the all-time set, 108-84. Houston is one win away from claiming its sixth Silver Glove title and first since 2018. Rice won the 2019 edition. The two teams met just once in 2020 and did not play for the first time since 1971 in 2021.

Houston's 29-15 record is its best mark through the first 44 games since equaling the mark in 2015. That season, the Cougars captured The American regular season title and hosted the NCAA Houston Regional en route to a 43-20 final record.

The Cougars are an impressive 19-10 in non-conference contests this season including 14-4 at home. Houston is batting .282 in non-conference games including .304 with runners and .378 with the bases loaded.
