Cougars thump Owls, 8-2 in midweek

HOUSTON – University of Houston Baseball's bottom of the order cashed in and the Cougars used a four-run third inning to capture the Silver Glove Series with an 8-2 win against Rice on Wednesday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

Redshirt junior Ian McMillan (3 for 3) delivered his third home run in two games depositing a two-out, two-run home run over the left field wall in the third after senior Ryan Hernandez (3 for 4) lined a two-run double into left field.

The win marked the Cougars' sixth Silver Glove title and second in the last three opportunities. With the win, Houston (30-15) locked up its 30th victory, doing so in its fewest total games (45) since replicating the feat in the 45th game during 2015.

Houston's bottom four in the order combined to go 8 for 13 with six runs and five RBIs. Not to be outdone, redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold, batting in the three-hole, collected three RBIs in a 2-for-5 performance.

Rice (13-31) could never break through against Houston junior starter Logan Clayton (3-3). The right-hander stranded two in the first inning and left the bases loaded in the fourth on a five-pitch strikeout of Owls senior Hal Hughes. Clayton allowed four hits and two runs while walking four and striking out as many in 5.0 innings.

After the Owls took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Cougars answered in the home half on freshman Brandon Burckel's two-out, RBI-single in the home half. Two innings later, Burckel's leadoff double led to a run on an RBI-groundout from Arnold.

Rice sophomore reliever Christian Cienfuego (0-2) drew the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. A two-out throwing error did Cienfuego in during the third as the Cougars went on to plate four.
