A new residential high-rise could start to emerge this year on the long vacant lot on corner of Bissonnet and Ashby Street in a leafy neighborhood near Rice University.
Six years after a judge's ruling paved the way for developers to move ahead with the so-called Ashby high-rise, Hunt Companies of El Paso has brought in Dallas-based StreetLights Residential as its new lead development partner. They recently announced plans to break ground on a 20-story luxury apartment community called The Langley. Planned for fewer but larger units than originally envisioned — 134 units in total instead of 228 — the tower is expected to break ground in November with completion targeted in 2025.
Originally announced in 2007 by Buckhead Investment Partners, which remains a passive investor, the proposed building sparked protests and lawsuits from residents who argued a high-rise was out of character for the neighborhood and worried about traffic congestion and plummeting property values. |
