Blue Raiders Complete Sweep with Beatdown of Rice

HOUSTON – Twenty-one runs off 18 hits was the story in Middle Tennessee's thrashing of Rice Sunday afternoon.

Seeking its first sweep of the season, it was the most runs scored in a game since the Blue Raiders piled on 24 runs at Belmont March 27, 2018.

An 11-run, nine-hit Blue Raider third inning marked the second time MT scored 11 runs in an inning this season (Feb. 26 vs. Illinois).

Following two singles to start the game by Fausto Lopez and JT Mabry, Lopez scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run.

Brian Dillingham hit an RBI single to left to make it 2-0 in the second and Lopez immediately followed with a sacrifice fly to add a run (3-0).

Five straight batters reached to start the third, including Jackson Galloway's RBI triple and Briggs Rutter's RBI single. Rutter scored on an error and Lopez drove in a run on a single but that would not be it.

The second trip through the order in the third started with three consecutive RBI doubles by Morgan, Galloway and Rutter, extending MT's lead to 12-0. Coker capped off the scoring with a two-run moonshot to left as the Blue Raiders led 14-0 after two-and-a-half.

Leading 14-2 entering the fourth, Dillingham scored on a wild pitch and two batters later, Morgan walked, Galloway singled and Rutter drove both runners on on an RBI double as MT led 18-2.

Jacob Williams blasted a three-run home run to left in the top of the sixth to get the Blue Raiders into the 20s (21-3).

Rice scored four in the bottom of the seventh but the mercy rule still applied to end the game at 21-7 after seven.

Galloway and Rutter each drove in four runs on three hits while all four Blue Raider infielders recorded two hits. Jalen Wirtz picked up his second win of the week after a scoreless outing of an inning-and-a-third.

Up Next
After an undefeated week and winners of their last six, the Blue Raiders wrap up the regular season with one last midweek at Vanderbilt Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT then returns home to face Southern Miss starting Thursday.
