Rice Game 3

Cougars Upended in 12 Innings

HOUSTON – Rice Baseball plated the game-tying run in the ninth inning and used a two-out RBI-single three frames later to upend the University of Houston 5-4 in 12 innings to salvage the Silver Glove Series finale on Tuesday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

Rice freshman Jack Ben-Shoshan played hero, sending a run-scoring single into left field in the 12th inning, scoring sophomore Pierce Gallo who led off the frame with a walk. With the win, the Owls (14-39) snapped their nine-game losing streak.

Houston (34-19) was saddled with its third consecutive loss. The Cougars, who were searching for their first Silver Glove Series season sweep since 2014, could not maintain a one-run lead in the ninth after a leadoff double and balk plated the tying run.

Houston took a one-run advantage in the eighth inning, thanks to a go-ahead RBI-single from redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold (2 for 5) down the right field line.

Houston redshirt junior Maddux Miller (3-1) drew the loss, permitting one run on two hits alongside three walks and a pair of strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Nine Cougar pitchers made an appearance, holding the Owls to seven hits across 12.0 innings.

After Rice pushed across two runs for a 3-1 lead in the sixth, Houston answered with a pair in the home half thanks to two Owl miscues. Arnold lined an RBI-single through the left side and two batters later redshirt sophomore Anthony Tulimero (1 for 5) reached on a fielder's choice while a wild throw allowed junior Alex Lopez to race home from second.

Houston manufactured the game's opening run in the third inning, taking advantage of a one-out single and stolen base from freshman Malachi Lott. With two away, junior Brandon Uhse fought off a 1-2 pitch, looping an RBI-single into shallow right field.

Lott, who earned the start on the mound before contributing a pair of hits at designated hitter, tossed 2.0 hitless innings, lowering his ERA to 2.00 while retiring all six batters faced. Houston pitching held the Owls to 1 for 13 (.077) and 1 for 5 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
