Southlake Carroll’s Ben Tryon

What he did: Tryon batted .800 with two doubles and five RBIs as Southlake Carroll swept Coppell in a Class 6A Region I semifinal series at Dallas Baptist University’s Horner Ballpark. He was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, including a double and a sacrifice fly, in a 4-0 win on Thursday. He was 2 for 3 with a two-run single in a 6-0 victory on Friday.

Who he is: A 6-foot junior infielder who is mainly a third and second baseman. He started playing baseball when he was six years old and living in Pontiac, Mich. His family moved to the Metroplex shortly thereafter. Tryon said he felt he could baseball at a high level when he was 10 or 11 years old. He verbally committed to Dallas Baptist in September, choosing the Patriots over programs such as Oklahoma State, Texas State, Tarleton State and Rice.

The stats: Tryon has a .409 batting average with eight runs scored, 11 RBIs, six doubles, one triple and one home run. Tryon’s numbers are limited this season because of a mid-season hip injury that forced him to miss 15 games. He is batting .471 in the playoffs with four doubles, one home run and seven RBIs. When he returned to the lineup he moved from third and second in part because of the strong play by current third baseman Cole Bedwell. Tryon has helped Carroll – ranked No. 5 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 6A area poll – compile a 30-8 record heading into the Class 6A Region I final matchup against Keller.

He said it: “Getting the series win was the best part about this week. My favorite hit was the double in the first game. That brought home (Ethan) Mendoza and got us going. I was getting inside change-ups and that’s what I hit. Our coaches did a good job scouting and getting me prepared for that. … I gained about 30 pounds of muscle since last year. I wasn’t eating anything special. You just need to be careful about what you eat to gain muscle weight.”

Coach said it: “On his hitting, Ben has great plate coverage. It makes it hard for pitchers to get him out with curveballs or changing speeds. He was a great situational hitter against Coppell in getting what we needed, like the sacrifice fly on Thursday. … In the past year he has changed in strength and size. He grew about two or three inches in height, and when you watch video of him, you can tell that he put in the work in the weight room,” – Carroll coach Larry Vucan.

Did you know? Tryon’s favorite course at Carroll is advanced U.S. History. He is especially interested in the world wars. … He plans on majoring in business at DBU. When his playing days end he would wants to work with a professional sports franchise. His dream job is to own a professional sports team, or at least be in a team’s front office. … His favorite meal is ribeye steak (medium), mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and lemonade. … Tryon’s favorite athlete is Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager. Tryon said he was thrilled when the Rangers signed the former Los Angeles Dodger, who was the 2020 World Series MVP, this past offseason. He said he likes Seager’s swing because his is similar.
