Crawley Bows Out At NCAA Singles Semifinals

May 27, 2022 | Women's Tennis

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - The 2021-22 North Carolina women's tennis season has officially come to an end. Sophomore Fiona Crawley was the final competitor remaining at the Division I NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship, but she bowed out admirably in the semifinals after a 6-4, 6-4, loss to Stanford's Connie Ma on Friday afternoon at the indoor courts on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Ranked 55th nationally entering the tournament, Crawley went unscathed through round rounds, winning each match in straight sets. Friday was a different story for the sophomore standout from San Antonio, Texas, who dropped the opening set 6-4. She rallied to take a 4-1 lead in the second set, but could not stop Ma, a highly-touted freshman that won the final five points to secure a spot in the finals against No. 2 seed Peyton Stearns of Texas.

Crawley finishes the year with a 47-7 overall singles record, a win total that leads all of Division I. In addition, the 47 wins trails only a pair of program legends for the most victories in a single season at Carolina. Jamie Loeb won 53 matches as a freshman in 2013-14 and Hayley Carter had 50 in her rookie season in 2013-14 and 49 wins as a junior in 2015-16.

Crawley also joined an exclusive Tar Heel group that includes Cinda Gurney (1993), Loeb (2015), Carter (2016), Cameron Morra (2019) and Sara Daavettila (2021) that have previously advanced to the semifinals.

Carolina enjoyed a strong week of success in Champaign during the singles and doubles championships. Crawley, Elizabeth Scotty and Carson Tanguilig all earned ITA All-America honors by reaching the Round of 16, while Cameron Morra was awarded the No. 5 seed in the bracket that also made her an All-America selection for the fifth time in her career.

Crawley and Scotty grabbed All-America honors in doubles by virtue of its No. 2 overall seed and advanced to the round of 16, while Morra and Tanguilig also won a doubles match to reach the round of 16 as well.

The Tar Heels finished the year with a 28-3 overall record in dual matches, captured yet another Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title and won a third-straight ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Carolina spent nearly the entire spring season ranked No. 1 in the nation and earned the top overall seed at the NCAA Team Championship and advanced to the semifinals.
