EUGENE, Ore. – Seven Conference USA outdoor track and field student athletes earned first team All-American honors this week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Rice’s
Grace Forbes (10k) and Middle Tennessee’s
Abigail Kwarteng (high jump) both saw podium finishes as they were the runner-up in each of their events.
Forbes clocked a time of 32:48.07 in the 10,000m to earn her fifth career All-American honor, between track and field and cross country. She paced the field in a tight race before closing strong just behind Alabama’s Mercy Chelangat.
In the high jump,
Kwarteng cleared a personal best height of 1.92m (6-3.5) on her first attempt to finish second overall. She only had one missed attempt on the day prior to that height. Her teammate
Eusila Chepkemei earned First Team honors in the 1,500m as she finished with a time of 4:11.44 for eighth overall. The C-USA champion also placed 19
th in the 5,000m with a 16:01.65.
FIU’s
Rhema Otabor earned a fourth-place finish in the javelin, throwing a mark of 55.92m (183-5) to earn First Team All-America status. In the triple jump, Middle Tennessee’s
Esther Isa reached a mark of 13.24m (43-5.25) on her third attempt to finish eighth overall.
On the men’s side, UTEP’s
JeVaughn Powell and Charlotte's
Justin Leaston each finished seventh in their respective events. Powell clocked a 45.81 in the 400m while Leaston finished the 110m hurdles in 13.50.
