There will be plenty of ways to learn about and celebrate Juneteenth this weekend throughout the Houston area.
June 19 marks 157 years since the emancipation of slaves in Texas and the United States. U.S. Gen. Gordon Granger read General Orders No. 3 on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, giving the holiday even greater meaning for the Houston region.
Houston Police and federal law enforcement will be on hand at Emancipation Park in the city's historic Third Ward to ensure the public's safety at the biggest event of the weekend.
Juneteenth 2022: Freedom Work
Prairie View A&M University, Rice University and Texas Southern University will host panels on topics ranging from Black Entrepreneurship to Higher Education, "Pathways to the Ph.D. for Black Students."

"Memory Builds the Monument" Film Screening
Celebrate Juneteenth by watching the screening of "Memory Builds The Monument." The award-winning short film documents the lives and struggles of Black Houstonians in the city's fifth ward from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Houston Mayor Turner's Annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade
The parade will begin at 10 AM and commence from Acres Homes Multi-Service Center 6719 W. Montgomery and end on 1620 Dolly Wright at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church around noon.

Black is Primary Juneteenth Festival
The festival will take place at the Post Houston, hosting children's storytimes, performances and financial workshops, all in "celebration of Black Joy."

The two-day celebration will feature local vendors, children’s activities, and musical performances from The Isley Brothers, Sheila E. and more

The Children's Museum Juneteenth Celebration
Open to all games, the Juneteenth celebration at the Children's Museum will feature performances, book giveaways, and a Black Panther meet and greet.

A Juneteenth Celebration at Bayou Bend
Comprised of family-centered activities, The celebration will include art workshops and talks by various artists Ted Ellis and Jolie Rocke.

Juneteenth: The Journey to Freedom
Presented by Wells Fargo, Miller Outdoor Theater will host five educational performances highlighting the origin of slavery, the civil rights movement, and the continuance of social justice.
